My 91 BRG, 25K miles, with CarTech Intercooled Turbocharger, had the whole rear end "shoot craps" and it needed to be replaced. This car has the viscous limited slip differential (VLSD). The part (yes only one) is $1500.00 new at the dealer. The good folks on the miata.net advised me to upgrade to a torsen (torque sensing) LSD (TLSD). The VLSD was on the older Miata and the TLSD is on 94 and newer Miata. NOTE: Not all Miata have LSD rear ends. I was able to find a torsen LSD from a 96 (7000 miles) in Houston Texas. To make the conversion I also needed the propeller shaft and the two rear drive shafts as well. This added to my total cost.
The fella in Texas lied to me and sent only the propeller shaft and the differential. Herein lies my troubles. When I got the short drive shafts from another used parts guy we developed a problem. My dealer, who was less than enthusiastic about the whole process, said "It won't work because of the ABS." My car did not have ABS, and the new parts came from a car that did. He was full of crap. It wouldn't work because the short stub shafts were missing. Once I got them we were in business. The shop tech did say that the new short drive shafts were too long (about 1 inch). He solved the problem by using my old parts where the short shafts get attached to the wheel assembly. So yes, it works. Folks on the net told me so, and others had already done it. Getting my dealer to believe me was the problem. My car seems to be doing fine now. Although it cost a lot more than I wanted, at least I am back on the road.
